Author Interview: Julia A. Royston

(1)  How did your life as a writer begin?

Writing came to me after going through a divorce in 1994. I started journaling as therapy. I didn’t realize what I was doing by journaling but I always felt better after I wrote. I wasn’t even writing about my situation, hurt feelings or anything just whatever popped in my head. I wrote it down.

(2) What makes you feel inspired to write?

Now, inspiration for writing will come from inside me or a question from a client or author. If there is a question, problem that comes to me, I usually write about it. On the other hand, God says, write about this and I write about it.

(3) How did you come with the idea for your current story?

I asked God about writing romance fiction and he said use your own life and embellish it and make it the ultimate love story for you.

(4) Tell us about your writing process. Do you outline, or are you more of a seat of your pants type of a writer?

I have done both. I started out totally writing what came to my head. No outline or guide, just writing. My business has grown and my time to write is shortened, I must write more focused than ever so an outline is a must. It saves time but it also doesn’t get me off course. I could expand some topics on my outline, but I don’t stray as much from the topic.

(5) What is your favorite scene in the book? Why?

In Jillian, my favorite scene is where Jillian and Byron are at a football game and faced with a little criticism. Please read that part, it is one of my favorites.

(6) What is your usual writing routine?

I write whenever I have free time, early in the morning, during lunch hour and late at night. If I am in my writing mode, i.e. have a deadline to get something done, I use every free moment to write. I make notes on napkins, scratch pads, send emails to myself and speak and record notes in my phone. I just have to get what’s in my head out.

(7) What is the highest goal that you desire to meet as an author?

To be able to have a demand for me to speak about my books and write meet the same financial level as my other aspects of my life so I can write, speak and coach writing full-time.

(8) What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone that wants to get into writing?

Three things:  Love it, Invest in it and Protect it with everything you’ve got.

(9)  How do you spend your free time? Do you have a favorite place to go and unwind?

I don’t have much free time but when I do, I love to travel, date nights with my husband and sleep. Lol.

THE SECRET ROOM BY JOHN ALEXANDER

Genre: Children's Mystery / Chapter Book
Date of Publication: October 14, 2017
Pages: 159

Synopsis:

Amber and Autumn, elementary school sisters, don’t seek out problems to solve, but they often find themselves engaged in uncovering truths, solving mysteries, and helping others in the process. Autumn’s natural curiosity, combined with her boldness, leads her to push for answers to anything she does not understand. Amber, her older sister, more cautious and easily spooked, prefers to let Autumn drive ahead to solve mysteries which come their way, but her keen skills of observation often lead to the resolutions they seek.

In The Secret Room, the girls, during their stay at a  B&B, discover a long-forgotten room in the attic and uncover its secrets. The story takes place at the House of Seasons, a bed-and-breakfast in historic Jefferson, Texas. Their quest to uncover secrets takes the girls on a journey through Jefferson history including a cemetery, a river boat tour, and even an evening ghost walk.

“Great book, really enjoyed reading.  I'd guess a target audience would be 7 to 13-year-olds. Thank you for allowing me the honor to preview your book.  I look forward to purchasing your published work.” -- Joseph (Teen Beta reader)
The Secret Room is a fun read. Not only is it a mystery; it also contains some of the history of Jefferson, Texas, and the surrounding area, as well as pictures of some special places there. Children and adults will enjoy reading it, just as I did.  -- Carol (Adult Beta Reader)
“Overall I thought it was a great book. I would be excited to read the next book in the series.” --Madeline (4th grade Beta Reader)
“The whole time I liked the suspense and the mystery side of it.” – Beta Reader
“I relate more to Amber because she doesn't like a situation without light and she doesn't like doing scary things first. She sends her little sister in to do it first and I do that. Amber is the older sister and so am I.” – Beta Reader

The owner of the House of the Seasons graciously allowed me to take pictures and use many of the features of this historic home to bring realism to my fictitious Bed-and-Breakfast.

The story and the original owners of the House of the Seasons are fiction as are various inventions about the house itself. The Jefferson history and the places in the town which provide the backdrop of the story are real, and the wonderful people in the town of Jefferson, dedicated to its historical preservation, give this town the special significance it deserves.

The cupola is a special and unique feature of this historic home. Below is a look at the cupola from inside.

Each window in the cupola is a different color and represents a different season of the year. Green represents the spring, red for summer, blue for winter, and amber for fall.

John writes chapter books that appeal to elementary school children to capture their imagination and help them discover the love of reading early in life. John lives in Frisco, Texas with his beautiful wife and his King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Charlie Brown.

John spent his childhood in a small town in east Texas. He attended college at the University of Texas earning a BS in Physics and a BA in Math (minor in Computer Science). His years in the high-tech industry, most of it on the “bleeding edge,” allowed him to develop new technology with software.

John had the privilege of co-authoring two editions of CallManager Fundamentals. The two books sold over 23,000 copies, exceeding the publisher’s goal of 8,000. Having discovered his love for writing while still working in high tech, he began writing fiction in his spare time and published The Enclave, a mystery / suspense novel, in 2010.

After leaving high-tech in 2014, he now spends full time pursuing his writing passion. He loves writing books that help children discover early in life that reading is a fun adventure. He recently released illustrated editions of the first three books in the Amber-Autumn mystery series: Christmas Garden Illustrated, Grandfather’s Blessing Illustrated, and Golden Campout Illustrated. The Secret Room is the fourth book in the series.

BROKEN GIRLS BY J. M. RYAN

Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Broken Girls by J. M. Ryan is a young adult work of fiction about a teen girl who was once a part of a "mean girls" clique and quickly falls from grace and becomes the persona non grata amongst her high school peers.

In just under 200 pages, Ryan crafts a story that touches on many important and relevant topics to teenagers today including popularity, academic success and college pursuits, grief, shame, divorce, friendship, and peer pressure. The book is narrated by the unlikable protagonist, Candace. We meet her and her friends: Luke (boyfriend), Drea, Allison, and Mindy. Very early in the book, we learn of an act her father commits that vastly changes the course of her senior year in high school. While Candace starts off as unlikable, the author does develop her character throughout the novel. Candace doesn't become totally likable by the end, but we do see growth in her, which makes the story more realistic.

I enjoyed the story and its related themes, but there were a couple of issues I had with the book. In my opinion, the author opened the story by introducing too many characters in the first few paragraphs. It was difficult to discern what role each one was going to play. Because many of the young girls in this book were influenced by peer pressure, their personalities were similar, so I had to jot down the names and a brief description to keep them straight in my mind. Candace, narrates the novel, but we don't learn her name well into first chapter of the book. Broken Girls is Ryan's debut novel, and I can certainly tell that it was a labor of love; however, there is definitely some more polishing that could have been done. I found several typos (probable instead of probably; Robbie when the character had been referred to as Robby for 2/3 of the book). I felt that some of the language the author used wasn't typical of the way teens speak today, and the Shannon character could have been more fully developed (or removed from the story). As a character, the author hinted that Shannon was going through some very difficult (maybe even criminal) situations, but the introduction of that information wasn't carefully constructed or resolved.

Recommendation: For the young adult audience, I think this book would bring about meaningful discussion on topics that most teens face. My only caution is that there is heavy language and some sexually-explicit scenes. I was gifted an electronic copy of this book in exchange for a critical review.

ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE BY GAIL HONEYMAN

Rating: 5 of 5 stars
There are some scars on my heart, just as thick, as disfiguring as those on my face. I know they're there. I hope some undamaged tissue remains, a patch through which love can come in and flow out. I hope. ~Eleanor Oliphant (p. 74)
I have a confession. I have the most difficulty writing reviews for books I throughly enjoyed. Over the course of a good read, my feelings slowly ooze out like gel from a tube of toothpaste, and it's nearly impossible for me to organize them into succinct paragraphs that would neatly fit back in the tube. However, for Ms. Honeyman's debut novel, I will make a solid attempt. Please have patience with me.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman is a quick, warm, and funny read. I devoured it in about two days. At its core, the book is a creative illustration of the raw truthfulness of depression and the voices that can continue to haunt us. But it's not all doom and gloom, this work of fiction is about friendship, love, starting over, and recognizing that hope is a good thing - and it's within our reach.

The titular character has been described by other critics as the young, female version of Ove (from A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman). I can see the similarities in the characters as well as Britt-Marie from Backman's Britt-Marie was Here. Having said that, Eleanor Oliphant is fully-developed in her own right. She's quirky and a little socially-awkward, but over the course of this ~330-page novel, the reader learns the reasons as to why Eleanor is a bit guarded. Told in first-person narrative by Eleanor, herself, she personally reveals bit-by-bit making this novel a fictional study of social penetration theory. And by the end, her personality traits are appreciated. (Wouldn't it be lovely if we got to know real people this way too?)

Early in the book, Eleanor meets Raymond, a co-worker and the IT guy at her office. Together, through happenstance, they help an elderly man in immediate need. From there friendships develop in the most unlikely of places, and Eleanor learns how to open her heart and let others in.

This book was bittersweet in that it focused on some very real issues with which many people struggle. The ending was not a happy ending tied in a nice bow, but much like life, it was complete. I stepped away feeling satisfied, but also hoping the author might give us another book featuring Eleanor (because I kinda fell in love with her)!

Recommendation: This is one of my favorite reads this year. It's definitely in the running for A Page Before Bedtime's Book of the Year recognition. Treat yourself and take in this read over the holiday (or sooner!).

Until next time ... Read on!

VENETIAN BLOOD: MURDER IN A SENSUOUS CITY BY CHRISTINE EVELYN VOLKER

Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Venetian Blood: Murder in a Sensuous City by Christine Evelyn Volker has all the makings of a juicy mystery: murder, theft, money-laundering, jilted lovers, and lost loves all on the backdrop of one of Italy's most beautiful cities — Venice.

The book starts off with a bang, well a stabbing, — the murder of financier and art investor, Sergio. The reader also quickly meets, Anna, the book's protagonist. Through Anna, the reader learns that Sergio is a murder victim, but not an innocent person by any stretch of the imagination. Anna, who is from California, is on vacation in Italy attempting to settle a score with Sergio after a brief love affair for which he is blackmailing her, healing from her failed marriage, and coming to terms with her infertility. In short, she's got a lot going on, folks. The author also introduces a large cast of characters spanning from the United States to Europe, thus crafting an international whodunnit.

I enjoyed the format of the book. Volker integrated quite a bit of the Italian culture including the language. I found it quite interesting how she included Italian phrases then followed up with the English translation for us non-speakers. As for the mystery, she reveals bit-by-bit through easily digestible chapters that move at an engaging pace. My only criticism is that, at times, the author overdid it with some of the descriptions that proved distracting for this reader. Nonetheless, the overall story was solid, and it was truly a challenge to discern who the real killer was. I was unable to figure it out until I neared the end, which is the sign of a great murder mystery, in my opinion. At one point, Anna seems a bit unstable and so shaken by her past that I began to believe she was the killer. But can a novel make the protagonist the villain as well? You'll have to read for yourself to find out!

Recommendation: I think this would be a good book for someone who is interested in the financial and money-laundering industries as well as Italian history and culture. A must read for mystery-lovers!

Until next time ... Read on!

Top Ten List:

My Top Ten List of Movies
By Linda Broday

When I want to relax and forget everything, I go to the movies. There’s something about sitting in a dark theater, watching the magic on the screen as the story unfolds and totally losing myself. And I also watch TV movies when I can’t get to the theater. The story medium doesn’t make too much difference—as long as it’s satisfying. I do require a happy ending.

Here are my top ten movies:

The Longest Ride – In this movie, a bull rider falls I love with college girl and he has to decide which he wants more. This is adapted from the book by Nicolas Sparks. Oh man, I love this movie so much I bought it. It stars Scott Eastwood and Britt Robertson. Can never watch enough.

Hidden Figures – This movie is about a group of black mathematicians who work for NASA and provide vital help on the space program. Such a really good movie with Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe.

To Kill a Mockingbird – Another adaptation from a book, this time by Harper Lee. It examines racial injustice in the old South and is one of Gregory Peck’s finest performances.

Lonesome Dove – A western adapted from the book by Larry McMurtry.  I can’t tell you how many I’ve watched this. I’m a huge Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones fan.

The Cowboys – A western starring John Wayne. When he can find no men to hire for drovers on a cattle drive, he hires a group of boys. I always cry in this movie. Those boys are so little and scared, but they saddle up and leave their home and parents behind. One of the best.

Unforgiven – This stars Clint Eastwood, an aging gunslinger who tries to fight injustice in a small town. I loved his need to help a soiled dove whose face was horribly slashed by a mean customer. He was ready to die to avenge her.

I Saw the Light – A movie of the life of Hank Williams. Tom Hiddleston does a magnificent job portraying this country music icon. It brings back memories when I was a little girl and sneaking into my grandpa’s room and listening to this song on his old radio.

Desperado – This western stars Alex McArthur who plays Duell McCall, a drifter who’s quick with a gun. I think he made six of these TV movies. I named my character Duel McClain who’s in Knight on the Texas Plains after Duell McCall. Loved him!

Open Range – A western with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall.  They fight against a corrupt sheriff and a cattle baron who try to control the land. These two are great together.

Beauty and the Beast – A timeless classic with great songs. This 2017 rerelease was exceptional with Emma Watson. She is indeed a beautiful lady.

Sadly, there are lots more that I didn’t have room to list. The common denominator of the these is that they all tell wonderful stories. I can’t wait to see what comes next. Maybe you’ll check some out. And my Men of Legend series.

About the Author:
Linda Broday
Historical Western
Romance Author
I'm a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 8 full length historical western romance novels, with another set to release 2017, and 10 short stories. Watching TV westerns during my youth fed my love of cowboys and the old West and they still do. I reside in the Texas Panhandle on land the American Indian and Comancheros once roamed. At times, I can feel their ghosts lurking around every corner. Texas’ rich history is one reason I set all my stories here. I love research and looking for little known tidbits to add realism to my stories. When I’m not writing, I collect old coins and I confess to being a rock hound. I’ve been accused (and quite unfairly I might add) of making a nuisance of myself at museums, libraries, and historical places. I’m also a movie buff and love sitting in a dark theater, watching the magic on the screen. As long as I’m confessing … chocolate is my best friend. It just soothes my soul.

ONE NIGHT IN SIXES BY TEX THOMPSON

 Genre: Epic Western Fantasy
Publisher: Solaris
Date of Publication: July 29, 2014
Pages: 464

Synopsis:

Appaloosa Elim is a man who knows his place.  On a good day, he’s content with it.

Today is not a good day.

Today, his so-called “partner” – that lily-white lordling Sil Halfwick – has ridden off west for the border, hell-bent on making a name for himself in native territory.  And Elim, whose place is written in the bastard browns and whites of his cow-spotted face, doesn’t dare show up home again without him.

The border town called Sixes is quiet in the heat of the day, but Elim's heard the stories about what wakes at sunset: gunslingers and shapeshifters and ancient animal gods whose human faces never outlast the daylight.

If he ever wants to go home again, he’d better find his missing partner fast. But if he’s caught out after dark, Elim risks succumbing to the old and sinister truth in his own flesh - and discovering just how far he’ll go to survive the night.
The first book in an epic fantasy Western series, One Night in Sixes tells the story of the fragile peace between the industrialized east and the indigenous west – and how it threatens to fall to pieces when two strangers cause a terrible accident. Recommended for fans of the Western mythos of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, the post-war frontier dynamics of Firefly and Deep Space Nine, and the multicultural fantasy realms of Ursula K. LeGuin.

Praise for One Night in Sixes:
"Clearly written and engaging" ~Publishers Weekly
“This author can really write. If you loved Stephen King’s Dark Tower series – or even if you’re a hardened Cormac McCarthy fan – you will find this book right inside your wheelhouse. Living, witty dialogue, and a familiar-yet-strange world inhabited by vivid characters. I loved it.” ~Paul Kearney, author of The Ten Thousand, Hawkwood and the Kings, and A Different Kingdom
"Sixes is a tinderbox of a town with tensions just waiting to go off - and Sil and Elim provide the match to set the volatile town ablaze." ~GCE
"One Night in Sixes tears the covers off the Western and Fantasy genres and turns them into something that will grip you from the first page to the last." ~Rebellion
